Excaliber Stables was founded in 1993 when the Basham family of Herscher, IL, purchased their first Miniature Horse. The
Bashams were immediately hooked on small equine and began to build their industry involvement. The family’s amateur-only
operation purchased more Miniatures and then added Shetland Ponies as well. The farm established breeding programs in both
divisions and began to establish a reputation for quality animals and show ring success.
Brenda Basham became the primary exhibitor and trainer for Excaliber Stables. She made a name for herself in the show ring,
first as a youth exhibitor and then as an amateur competitor. The family turned to outside professional trainers only sparingly, but
when they did, Brenda made the most of this learning opportunity to expand her own equine training and handling skills. Brenda
has a degree in ag business, and she has studied with some of the industry’s top training facilities. She is an expert in building
bodies and coats on the horses and ponies in Excaliber’s care and does an outstanding job working with youth and amateur
exhibitors. Brenda is also involved in several small equine industry programs for youth and young adults. As a professional and
licensed steward for the ASPC/AMHR, Brenda provides excellent support to clients with her knowledge of breed and show rules.
In 1999, the Excaliber family expanded when Jason Prince and his son, Taylor, joined the farm. Jason soon put his experience
with Saddlebreds and Arabs to good use working Excaliber’s small equine show string. Since joining Excaliber, Jason has built on
his training skills through hard work and careful study of some of the industry’s best trainers. With Jason at the helm, Excaliber
specializes in bringing out young stock, training performance animals and re-establishing difficult equine on a road to show ring
success. Jason is also a highly regarded and sought after licensed steward and judge for the ASPC/AMHR/ASPR. He, too, is
involved with the industry organizations and supports a variety of small equine programs and activities.
After joining Excaliber with his father, Taylor Prince, with amazing natural show ability, was soon a force to be reckoned with in the
youth division. He assists with daily care and enjoys working with horses and ponies for specialty areas such as showmanship,
hunter, jumper or obstacle.
Given the success Excaliber Stables experienced as amateurs in their first 14 years of operation and the large number of
requests for assistance the ES crew often fielded, Jason and Brenda Prince established a professional training stable under the
Excaliber banner in 2007.
Today, the personal component of the original operation continues. Carroll and Pam Basham, who originally established
Exacliber Stables, continue to provide moral support for the entire operation and help oversee the breeding program.
Excliber Stables has a strong and grounded background in small equine that they combine with an eye toward the future and a
goal to constantly grow. The entire Excaliber Stables crew has an excellent work ethic and values quality stock and top-of-the-line
preparation. The Bashams and Princes believe in professional presentation, in youth and amateur support and in building a
bright future for small equine. They are ready to assist clients on the road to success.
